Understanding Video Production Calculations
Video file size is determined by bitrate multiplied by duration. A 4K video at 100 Mbps generates approximately 750 MB per minute, or 45 GB per hour. Understanding this relationship is essential for planning storage, backup strategies, and transfer times before a shoot.
The 180-degree shutter angle rule is the cinematographic standard for natural-looking motion blur. It translates to a shutter speed of 1/(2 × frame rate). At 24fps, that is 1/48 second; at 60fps, 1/120 second. Deviating from this creates either staccato, overly sharp motion (faster shutter) or dreamy, blurred motion (slower shutter).
Slow motion requires capturing at a higher frame rate than playback. Shooting at 120fps and playing back at 24fps gives 5x slow motion. The slow motion factor equals capture fps divided by playback fps. Higher capture rates need more light and generate larger files.
Time-lapse photography reverses this: you shoot at a slow interval (e.g. one frame every 5 seconds) and play back at normal speed (24 or 25fps).
