Render Time Estimate
Render time = clip duration × base ratio × complexity multiplier × GPU factor
Base ratio represents your system render speed relative to real-time. A ratio of 3 means a 1-minute clip takes 3 minutes to render at standard complexity. The complexity multiplier adjusts for effects load, and the optional GPU acceleration factor (Advanced, default 1) reduces the time when hardware encoding is used. The effective ratio shown is render time ÷ clip duration, so it reflects every multiplier.
Indicative estimate only. Render time is highly dependent on your codec, hardware (CPU vs GPU encoders such as NVENC or QuickSync) and project, and these multipliers are rules of thumb rather than measured values. For an accurate figure, export a short test clip on your own system and use the resulting real-time ratio as your base ratio.
Frequently Asked Questions
Render time depends on output format, effects complexity, resolution and hardware. A basic 1080p timeline with colour grading might render at 2-3x real-time on a mid-range system. Heavy 4K VFX work can take 10-20x real-time. GPU acceleration significantly reduces render times.
Effects and compositing layers have the biggest impact. Colour grading adds modest overhead. Heavy effects (noise reduction, stabilisation, particle effects) multiply render time. Hardware matters: GPU-accelerated encoding (NVENC, QuickSync) is 3-10x faster than CPU-only encoding.
Use GPU-accelerated encoding (H.264/H.265 NVENC). Render with proxy files during editing. Use hardware-accelerated effects. Reduce unnecessary effects. Render at the delivery resolution, not higher. Use SSD storage for source files. Close other applications during rendering.
For complex projects, render to an intermediate codec (ProRes, DNxHR) first, then transcode to delivery format. This preserves quality for future re-exports and is faster than re-rendering effects each time. For simple projects, render directly to delivery format (H.264/H.265).
