This calculator analyses the vanishing point position relative to compositional guides:
Vanishing Point
The vanishing point is where parallel lines in a scene appear to converge. Its position in the frame determines the composition feel.
Convergence Angles
Angle to corner = atan2(corner_y − vp_y, corner_x − vp_x)
The quadrant-correct atan2 form is used (and normalised to 0–360°) so angles read consistently in image coordinates, where y increases downward from the top-left origin.
Rule of Thirds & Golden Ratio
The calculator checks whether the vanishing point falls near a rule-of-thirds or golden-ratio intersection — both considered strong compositional positions. The rule-of-thirds grid lines sit at 1⁄3 and 2⁄3 of each dimension (33.3% and 66.7%). The golden-ratio (phi) grid lines sit at 38.2% and 61.8% from each edge, since 61.8 ÷ 38.2 = φ ≈ 1.618. The Grid Tolerance advanced option sets how close (as a fraction of the frame) the point must be to count as "on" a line.

Leading lines are visual elements that guide the viewer eye through the image towards the main subject or vanishing point. Roads, fences, rivers, railway tracks, architectural edges and shadows all make effective leading lines. They create depth, movement and visual flow in your composition.
Strong compositions often place the vanishing point on a rule of thirds or golden ratio intersection. Central vanishing points create symmetry and formality. Off-centre vanishing points create more dynamic compositions. The vanishing point does not need to be within the frame — it can be outside the image edges.
Converging lines trigger the brain perception of depth through linear perspective. The closer the lines get together, the further away that part of the scene appears. This effect is strongest with wide-angle lenses that exaggerate perspective convergence.
One-point perspective has a single vanishing point where all parallel lines converge (looking straight down a road). Two-point perspective has two vanishing points (looking at a building corner). Three-point perspective adds a vertical vanishing point (looking up at a skyscraper).
