Golden Spiral Calculator — Fibonacci Spiral Overlay
Calculate golden spiral overlay dimensions, focal point and phi grid lines for your image frame.
How We Calculate This
The golden spiral is constructed from successive golden rectangles, each divided into a square and a smaller golden rectangle.
Focal Point
Default focal X = width / phi (61.8% from left)
Default focal Y = height / phi (61.8% from top)
Phi Grid
The phi grid places lines at 1/phi (61.8%) and 1 - 1/phi (38.2%) of each dimension, compared to 33.3% and 66.7% for the rule of thirds.
Frequently Asked Questions
The golden spiral (Fibonacci spiral) is a logarithmic spiral that grows by the golden ratio (1.618) with each quarter turn. When overlaid on a photograph, the spiral guides the viewer from the outer edge towards a focal point. Place your main subject at the convergence point.
The rule of thirds divides the frame into equal thirds (33/66%). The golden spiral and phi grid divide at 38/62% (1/phi). The golden ratio points are slightly closer to centre than thirds intersections, which often creates a more naturally balanced composition.
Yes. The spiral can be placed in any of four orientations, converging to any corner. Choose the orientation that best matches your composition flow. This calculator lets you select the orientation to see the correct focal point position.
Use the golden spiral for compositions with curves and flowing lines, such as seascapes, roads, rivers, and portraits. The rule of thirds works better for simple compositions with strong horizontal or vertical elements like horizons and buildings.
