Technical knowledge helps photographers get sharp images consistently. The traditional reciprocal rule states that the minimum hand-held shutter speed should be 1/focal length (in seconds). With a 200mm lens, that means at least 1/200s. However, modern high-resolution sensors and crop factors change this calculation significantly.

The hand-hold limit calculator accounts for crop factor, image stabilisation, sensor resolution and personal steadiness to give you a realistic minimum shutter speed for sharp hand-held shots. It adjusts the traditional reciprocal rule for modern camera systems.

Image stabilisation (IS/VR/IBIS) can extend hand-holding limits by several stops. A 5-stop IS system on a 200mm lens theoretically allows sharp shots at 1/6s instead of 1/200s, though real-world results depend on technique and subject movement.
